Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her grandmother and mother. The only child she has. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. She completed her secondary education her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She planned to become a high school English teacher. The dream, however ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit college after three year of studies and was a teachers' aide. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work at live poetry readings and ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. In a Roots performance, she came out to be an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to learn about the arts of performing during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was hired by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
